  • sometimes called Cuarto, a cop- per coin of Spain, of the value of one quarter of a Real. It dates from the time of Ferdinand and Isabella. During the French occupation of Barcelona and Cata- lonia from 1808 to 1814, pieces of one half (i.e., Ochavos), one, two, and four Quartos were issued, and after the Span- ish rule was resumed multiples as high as six Quartos appeared.

    In 1802 private firms at Gibraltar issued tokens of one and two Quartos valued re- spectively at a half Penny and a Penny. A regal coinage was introduced by Great Britain in 1842, consisting of a half Quart. Quart, and two Quarts, the Quart being equal to a half Penny.
