Definition
  • A general name for the Italian medals of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries which exhibit beautiful workmanship compared with their prede- cessors. There are a large number of trea- tises on the subject, e.g., by Friedliinder, Armand, and Lenormant in the Tresor de Numismatique et de Glyptique, 1834-1850.
