Semis Publique Deposited
The half of the As, of a weight of six ounces. It bears on the obverse the head of Jupiter and on the reverse the prow of a galley and the letter S. See Aes Grave. Also used for the half Aureus (q.v.) struck in Imperial times, in place of the old name Quinarius Aureus. The half Solidus (q.v.) was also called Semis.
