  • The name given to the paper money issued by the Congress of the United Colonies in North America. They were first made May 10, 1775, and continued in use until prohibited by the Constitution of the United States as that instrument was finally ratified and adopted in 1789.

    The Colonies from 1775 to 1779 issued large numbers of bills of various denomi- nations from one sixth of a Dollar to eighty Dollars; twenty different values with eleven distinct dates.
