Doyt Public Deposited

Definition
  • The English equivalent for the Duit (q.v.). The name is evidently a corruption of the French d'huit, an eighth, this being their value as compared to the Stuiver.

Doits were current in Scotland during the reign of the Stuarts, but their importation was prohibited in 1685. See Ruding, Annals of the Coinage of Britain. 1840 (ii. 22).
