  • A name generally applied to any small coin of unusual thickness, irrespective of the metal or value. Well known examples are the early coins of Ceylon with elephants on the obverse; the thick small half penny of George I of England, issued in 1718; the Bit (q.v.) cut out of the Spanish Pesos; and the centre piece of the Holey Dollar (q.v.).
