Definition

  • The name given to a medallic Thaler issued by the city of Strasburg in 1681 when this town sur- rendered to the French on September 20 of that year. It has on the obverse a figure of a comet which appeared in the preceding year, and which was associated by the superstitious with the calamity which had befallen the city.
