Papineau Público Deposited
A nickname given by the French-Canadians to the Pennies and half Pennies issued by the Bank of Montreal, City Bank, Pa Banque du Peuple, and the Quebec Bank in 1837. Pierre Papineau was the leader of the rebellion which occurred in this year. The coins bear on one side the figure of a native in winter costume. The value of this Penny was increased one fifth by an order in the Council, passed August 30, 1870, which established a uniform currency of Dollars and Cents, and converted its purchasing power at two Cents.
