Définition
  • Gold coins of Macedonia, which derive their name from having been issued by Philip, the father of Alexander the Great.

They are frequently mentioned by an- cient writers, and Ldvy relates (Lib. xliv. e. 15) that in the year of Rome 583 (B.C. 169) ambassadors from Pamphylia brought an offering of a crown of gold for the tern pie of Jupiter, wrought from twenty thou- sand Philippi. Later this term came to be applied to Roman Imperial coins as well.
