Twenty Pound Piece Pubblico Deposited
The largest of all the gold coins of Scotland, struck bv James VI in 1576. The motto on the reverse, PAECEBE . SVBIECTIS . & DEBELLARE . SVPEBBOS, i.e., " To spare the humbled, and to crush the insolent," is taken from Virgil Aen. (vi. 853).
