Definition

• Soften metal by heating. Die blanks are annealed before handwork with engraving tools, and before and/or between blows from the hub, the former to make fine detail work possible, the latter to avoid stress-hardening and brittlemess. Planchets are annealed before striking, to save wear and tear on dies.
