  • Said of a coin or medal given a protective coating or artificial patina by coating it with bronzing powder and baking it. The process was invented in Boulton & Watt's Soho Mint ca. 1788, experimentally used in the Philadelphia Mint ca. 1830-1880, at first on cent and half-cent proofs, later on medals. The composition of bronzing powder remains unknown.
