Bungtown Öffentlichkeit Deposited
1. Insulting 18th-century epithet for any filthy backwoods town; from bung, 'arse'. 2. Lightweight copper coin attributed to makers in such a town, especially North Swansea/Rehoboth, Mass., and possibly Westerly, R.I.; particularly to imitation British halfpence. Only the more prudish fold etymology attempted to derive it from Birmingham or its dialect form Brummagem, after the city where private mints exported coppers to New York and Philadelphia merchants. 3. Misnomer for evasion copper, from S. K. Harzfeld and Charles N. Schmall.
