cast blank Public Deposited
A planchet made in a mold the size and shape of the intended coin. Copper coins were in the 18th century sometimes made on cast blanks, though the practice was disapproved as easing the counterfeiters' task. Genuine copper coins were normally struck on blanks cut from rolled strip. Cast blanks have rounded edges (without shear marks from the blank cutter) and will show porosity in protected areas, but under high magnification, edges of devices show the same kind of striations as other struck coins. Examples include some 1760 VOCE POPULI coppers.
