Any strip fabricated by bonding both sides of a central core to thinner layers ("cladding") of a different metal. Synonym: Sandwich metal. Two kinds are in common use in federal coinage (1965- ): 1. Copper core bonded to nickel alloy. 2. Billon core bonded to higher-grade silver alloy.
