Unauthorized imitation of a coin, generally distinguishable from the genuine by differences in manufacturing methods. Herein specifically refers to pieces falsely made to circulate as money, or more recently to gold coins falsely imitating genuine ones, made to sell to bullion dealers, jewelers, speculators, gold hoarders, etc. Numismatic fakes, made to deceive coin collectors and dealers, are instead called forgeries.
