[Heraldry] A device surmounting the arms, and blazoned separately; examples herein include the coronet on Lord Baltimore's coins, the eagle and demiglobe on torse above New York arms on the EXCELSIOR and GEORGE CLINTON coppers, the eagle above arms on the Washington LIBERTY AND SECURITY pence, the arm and arrow on torse on the MASSACHUSETTS and CALIFORNIA gold coins. Crests have sometimes been made into complete devices independent of the arms; examples herein include the eagle on demiglobe on New York pattern coppers, and the nag's head on torse on New Jersey coppers.
