Lightweight coin rudely imitating British or Irish halfpence of George II or III but with fictitious dates and irrelevant or fanciful legends which could deceive only the illiterate; e.g., GEORGE RULES for GEORGIUS III REX, or BRITONS ISLES for BRITANNIA, or HISPANIOLA for HIBERNIA: Thompson {1949}. Many types came from William Lutwyche's mint in Birmingham. Not to be confused with bungtown copper.
