• A coin designed on whim or to create a rarity, not out of any urgency for a circulating medium. Examples in federal coinage include the 1866 Philadelphia silver without motto, 1859-60 half dimes and dimes without UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1868 large cent of 1857 type.
