Louis Mirliton Öffentlichkeit Deposited
Nickname for the louis d'or coined at 27 livres by Edict of Aug. 1723. Quantities officially shipped to Canada went instead to the ocean floor in the wreck of the Chameau off Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Aug. 26, 1725, and were retrieved in 1965 by a salvage team. The name Mirliton, 'reed flute,' apparently alludes to a popular song ridiculing the Prime Minister at the time of the coins' issue.
