Style of 3 found on later dies of 1873, with the knobs far apart. Produced in response to the Coiner's complaint, Jan. 18, 1873, about the closed 3. Similarly for other open digits, in which knob of 5, 6, or 9 is free of cusp or loop; but no documentation survives for these changes.
