• Sequence of owners of a coin. Ideally, equivalent to the legal term "chain of title." In practice, often contains gaps because many dealers discard, falsify, or suppress pedigree data to prevent collectors from deciphering their cost codes or learning their markup; some even clean coins lest they be recognized at subsequent auction appearance. This has the unwanted side effect of making some coins appear to be commoner than they actually are.
