planchet defects Public Deposited

Definition
  • Those present on the blank before striking. Occluded gas in the ingot produces laminations and splits when the bubbles break during rolling into strip. Inhomogeneities or inclusions of foreign matter in the ingot produce discolored streaks (formerly called "drift marks"), or sometimes granular cavitations or cracks. Because these all preceded striking, they do not count as damage to the coin.
