privymark Public Deposited

Definition
  • 1. British numismatic term for different. 2. Any similar unexplained symbol, generally at beginning or end of legend, or (in the Mark Newby coins) below the king. Both meanings may allude to the local mintmaster, engraver, provincial mint, or even the group ordering that particular batch of coins. The peculiar ornaments on some Connecticut coppers may function similarly or for quality control.
