Degree to which devices protrude outward from fields. In general, the higher the relief, the more blows from the hub necessary to make a working die, and the more blows from the working die necessary to bring up the design on the finished coin or medal. This is why production coins are in low enough relief to show all essential details from a single blow from the dies.
