restrike Öffentlichkeit Deposited
Generic term for any coin minted after the year of its date. In practice, the term is not applied to production coins (e.g., the 1802- and 1803-dated silver dollars struck in 1804, the 1845 O quarter eagles made in Jan. 1846, etc.), where mint economy or unavailability of new dies dictated the policy, but to proofs struck later to accommodate favored parties. The label has unjustly become a stigma, avoided as a designation of many coins lest auction prices fall; in actuality, many restrikes are rarer than originals, and some have no original counterparts (e.g., 1838-39 Gobrecht dollars with starry rev.).
