Definition

• 1. Symbol or ornament representing a heavenly body other than sun, moon, planet, or comet; rays proceeding from around a central point. The heraldic estoile has six or sometimes eight wavy lines. 2. Symbol of pentagram shape, properly a heraldic molet or spur rowel; mistaken for an estoile from the appearance of such ornaments in the arms of George Washington, and so represented in the arms and flag of the United States.
