stria(e) Publique Deposited

(Latin) "Line(s), generally straight, in relief on a coin, often in parallel groups or randomly scattered" (Breen {1977}, p. 306). Parallel striae occur most often in fields on 19th-century coins, generally from a file, lapstone, grinding wheel, or buffing wheel applied to the die; scattered striae are a feature of St. Gaudens's prototype $10 and $20 coins of 1907, but occur also on some 1921 Peace dollars and some comemorative. They are not a guarantee of genuineness, let alone of proof status. Their configuration is distinctive for each working die.
