witch piece Público Deposited
Thin silver coin, generally a Massachusetts silver coin, bent (often showing teethmarks) and carried as a charm to protect the user against alleged baleful influence of witches during the Salem witchcraft delusion of 1692. Noe {1952} called attention to a possible realtionship between such bent silver pieces and the Mother Goose rhyme about the crooked man who walked a crooked mile, "And found a crooked sixpence/Against a crooked stile."
