Definition

• Aluminum Throw.  A light-weight, low-cost medal intended to be thrown to spectators from parade floats or such. New Orleans Mardi Gras has spawned more aluminum throws than any other event. First issued in 1960, they are sponsored by parading clubs and made of anodized aluminum in a variety of colors. Over 30 fraternal clubs have issued these, some a different variety each year forming somewhat of a series. They are also called "doubloons," the designs and diework range from crude to quite attractive. Their light-weight composition not only are easy to coin and color but excellent for throwing to parade throngs (where a heavier metal could be a dangerous projectile).
