• Anachronistic.  A coin or medal obviously not made during the year or period it so indicates; a misdated item. It is not a restrike (made after its original issue with the same dies), but rather a piece made far ahead, or far after, the time it indicates by its inscription and devices. Care must be used in ascribing a medal as anachronistic as it could well be an anniversary medal issued a significant number of years after the event featured on the piece.  See dates and dating of medals. Numismatic writer Walter Breen cites some design anachronisms: the strongest is the medieval chain mail on Miss Liberty on the 1917 Type II NacNeil Liberty Standing quarter restyled by Charles E. Barber. While anachronistic is chronologically out of place, it should not be confused with incongrous, out of place geographically or otherwise inappropriate in its present state.
