Definition

• Apocryphal.  A coin that is unaccepted or unauthorized, or of unknown source. Apocryphal coins were issued but of doubtful authority for the reason of their questionable origin. The best examples in America are the New Yorke Farthing tokens, Breen 245–247. They are undated and first appeared in a group of Civil War tokens in 1861. While the spelling of Yorke suggests an issue period of 1664-1770, no amount of research can document these struck pieces to that time. No authority can prove or disprove they are spurious. Crosby listed them in his Early Coins of American, 1870, and they were included in some major American collections (Appleton, Garrett, Jenks, Mickley, Parmelee, and others) but still remain of uncertain origin or authority.
