Definition

• Appressed Finish.  Applying chemicals to an object to be patinated by the use of cotton or cloth. Cloth strips of cotton batting (cotton wool) are soaked in the chemical solutions and packed tightly against the object (usually bronze, but silver can be patinated this way as well). The cloth is often forced into crevices with a stiff brush by stipple action, and some means is used to hold the cloth in place. The cloth is removed before the solution is dried out, usually 20 to 30 hours. Slightly less than 10 percent of the known patina finishes can be applied in this manner.
