Definition

• Appurtenance.  An accessory of a medallic item, a separate or supplemental part of a medal, as a hanger, bar, ribbon, clasp, ring or such, a component, as of a decoration. An appurtenance is not an integral part of a medallic item, that is, it is not part of the die and struck at the same time with the medallic item, but is manufactured separately and later assembled.  See suspension.
