- Auction. An organized method of selling items by competitive bids. Auctions are the most efficient manor of selling numismatic items and have been so for more than two centuries in Europe and for more than 150 years in America. While auctions were first used in Roman times, their first use for transferring numismatic property did not come about until coin collecting became widespread among an educated class of citizens. A list or catalog is issued of the items to be sold where bids are solicited in person or by other means/ The bulk of cataloging work in numismatics is the preparation of the catalog listings to identify the specific item and to enhance its appeal to prospective bidders.Word List #5Auction WordsAdvance House Bidattribution Internet BiddingAuction House LotBid Sheet Lot NumberBidder LottingBidder Name Mail BidBidder Number Minimum BidBook misattributedCatalog Paddlecataloging Phone BidCommissions Prices RealizedCompetitive Bidding provenancecondition ReserveCut Bid Successful Bidderdescribing Suggested PriceDescription Terms of SaleEstimate Withdrawn LotFloor Bid
