Definition
  • Banderole.  A ribbon symbolic of a narrow flag or streamer which contains an inscription; or such a blank device appearing on a medallic item before the lettering is later engraved or inscribed. The area of the banderole to be inscribed is called the reserve. An exceptional medallic design of a banderole is under the entry on cartouche (which see).
