Definition

• Brooch. (2)  A metal bar and some form of pin, tongue or stem with a clasp, where one or more ribbon drapes can be attached with suspended medals for military CAMPAIGN MEDALS or DECORATIONS. The brooch has one thin metal bar over which the ribbon or ribbons are draped and a second piece with the pin holds the ribbon in place, the two pieces are attached together locking the ribbon in place. This secures the ensemble for attaching to a garment suspending the medals.
              There are at least five kinds of brooches which have been used for suspending ribbon drapes, and each of which contains the pin and catch. These include a BROOCH BAR, with a gilt metal frame, a brooch buckle, with several tongue hooks exposed within the metal frame, a slot brooch, with a metal backpiece, a split brooch, with tabs on each side of the bar instead of a backpiece (for a single ribbon only), and a wrap brooch, with a bar twice as wide as the ribbon that bends around in back. For some of these the end of the ribbon must be sewn to the back of the ribbon after it is wrapped around the bar which is hidden from view.
