• Cartoon.  An outline drawing of a numismatic or medallic design – often the device only – to be transferred to a die for hand engraving. The hard edge design may be transferred in any of several ways, the design is then roughed out on the face of the die,
  in agreement with the cartoon; then the design features are developed more fully by engraving the relief. Both cameo and intaglio dies may be cut from a cartoon outline.  See drawings and sketches.
