• Cast Hollow.  Molded to produce a cast medallic shell; not cast solid. Medallic items are cast hollow by the use of a shell mold. An obverse with high relief is mated with a mold for the back side which forms the depressed areas following the high relief congruent on the obverse face. This is done for the same reasons statues are cast hollow: to reduce weight and curtail, somewhat, the cost of the metal. Hollow medallic items can be left as is (for a single-sided item), have a backplate attached, or have two cast sides soldered together to form a cast double medallic item.
