- Chalk. A white calcareous substance used for die engraving prior to transferring a design, or to coat the face of a die with chalk upon which the design is drawn or scribed. Hand die engravers use precipitated chald. A similar technique, called chalk engraving, is used in stereotyping to produce a relief form.
