Clashed Dies Público Deposited

Definición
  • Clashed Dies.  When two dies come together in a press without a blank, and the die clearance is not great enough, the two dies will clash together, causing one or both dies to misform. The next struck piece will show the effect of that misformation. The struck piece may exhibit only a few lines of the clashing, or more severely, an image of the entire opposite die. Thinner pieces, obviously with lower die clearance , tend to have clashed dies more so than thicker pieces; dimes more so than dollars. In high-speed coining presses the failure of a blank to enter coining position is either a failure of the mechanical feeder, or the hopper is empty of blanks. In manually operated presses it is human failure not to feed a blank before actuating the press. Compare suction mark.

Clash Mark.  Partial lettering or design on a struck piece, evidence that immediately prior to the striking of that piece, the two dies clashed without a blank between them leaving one or both dies malformed. The partial lettering or design will be directly opposite the original area on the other side of the piece. This consimilar positioning is diagnostic of clashed dies with the resulting clash marks. In cataloging, struck pieces with clash marks must be so identified as this indicates a distinctive varient of that die variety.
