Definition

• Coining Chamber.  An enclosed space entirely surrounded by dies and collar in which a blank is fed to form a struck piece. The coining chamber is formed within the aperture of the collar by the obverse and reverse dies. While it is an imaginary compartment it is created with each cycle of the press and extension of the dies. The dies shape the blank into the required design and force metal against the confines of the collar. The dies then retract, the struck piece is ejected and the chamber is no more. In effect, the area of  the coining chamber is the exact shape or mass of the struck piece.  See coins and coining.
