  • Commission of Fine Arts.  A United States Government organization entrusted with the responsibility to review matters of art within the government. Established in 1910, the commission is composed of seven well-qualified judges appointed by the president. Of numismatic interest, the commission passes on each new coin and medal design before

    it can be struck the United States Mint. While it is not empowered to halt production of any piece in which it may disapprove, it does issue opinions that are highly respected by mint engravers and designers.
