Definition

• Countermark.  Letters, symbols, devices, figures, or their combinations, punched into the face of a numismatic or medallic item to slightly alter its use; a counterstamp.
  Coins are sometimes counterstamped to extend the validity of the piece in time or region.  See counterstamped, counterstamping.
