Crimped Clasp Hanger Pubblico Deposited
- Crimped Clasp Hanger. A separate loop made with two attached prongs; it is applied to an existing medallic item to be able to suspend it from a ribbon or chain. Its purpose is to lessen the damage to the suspended pendant item, as it is not necessary to drill a hole in the item's surface or edge to apply a crimped clasp hanger. These hangers are available in several varieties (from jewelry supply houses or medal manufacturers make their own). Most take the shape of a globe or barrel with the loop on top and the prongs below. One variety is called a clamshell hanger (for its broad prongs); another exotic variety is called a crimped leaf hanger – its diestruck prongs are highly decorated in a leaf design. It is useful if the suspended pendant item has a significant rim (a multistep border is even better). This aids in supporting the weight of the piece. The prongs must extend over the rim of the medal at the 12:00 position and crimp back under the rim. Pressure is applied to these prongs to force fit them against the area inside the rim or border on both obverse and reverse. This crimping pressure usually forms an indentation in the surface and sometimes bulges the nearby edge of the medal). Later should any crimped clasp hanger be removed it will usually display these indentations as crimp marks. See also loop, suspension.
