Definition

• Crimp Marks.  Evidence on a medallic item that at one time the piece had been mounted with crimping prongs of a crimped clasp hanger and this form of suspension attachment had been removed. Crimp marks usually are a triangular shaped surface depression, usually at the 12 o'clock position, in one or both sides of the piece and a bulging of metal at that point of the edge. While the purpose of a crimped clasp hanger is not to damage the medal, crimp marks are evidence that just the opposite has happened.
