Diagnostic Detail Público Deposited
- Diagnostic Detail. Distinguishing elements or detail on a numismatic item that identifies it from all other similar varieties. Since varieties differ as a result of some alteration to the die or dies (or their pairing) numismatists look for differences in dates, lettering, figures, ornaments or the devices to distinguish different varieties. A detail – such as a retooled number – which is unique to that variety becomes the diagnostic element that numismatists can identify similar specimens as being of that exact varietyor not. In a way, diagnostic detail can also be useful in determining genuine from spurious pieces. See authentication, copies and replicas; dies and diemaking, die variety, errors.
