- Die Clearance. The gap between two dies setup in a striking press; the gap is necessary to prevent the dies from clashing together. Die clearance is obviously less for thinner gauge blanks than thicker ones. Thus clashing (resulting in damaged clashed dies) is more prevalent on thinner coins and medals, more so on dimes, for example, than on dollars. In effect, it is this die clearance that creates the coining chamber inside the collar.
