Double Denomination Öffentlichkeit Deposited
- Double Denomination. A striking error bearing the image of two coins, one superimposed on the other and both visible. It is caused by a struck piece, perhaps lodged in a hopper or other conveyor, becoming loose and feeding into a press a second time after a new set of dies for a different denomination have been installed. Or such could happen on a separate press striking a different denomination coin. A final possibility is a capricious act of a pressman knowingly feeding an already struck coin into the feeding hopper of an active press. While the second strike nearly obliterates the first, there will be an outline of the first relief still discernable. The obliterated design is called the undertype.
