Engraver's Marks Public Deposited

Definition
  • Engraver's Marks.  Evidence of hand engraving, either on a struck piece from a hand engraved die, or a medallic item entirely hand engraved. The term includes the engraver's signature, or lines, ornaments, symbols or marks peculiar to the engraver. Such distinctive engraving characteristics are sometimes the unconscious work of the artist – as the manner he treats an eye or ear or such (a mannerism) – or his intended effort to be original or unique.
